Finite-temperature geometric properties of the Kitaev honeycomb model

2018

We study finite temperature topological phase transitions of the Kitaev's spin honeycomb model in the vortex-free sector with the use of the recently introduced mean Uhlmann curvature. We employ an appropriate Fermionisation procedure to study the system as a two-band p-wave superconductor described by a BdG Hamiltonian. This allows to study relevant quantities such as Berry and mean Uhlmann curvatures in a simple setting. More specifically, we consider the spin honeycomb in the presence of an external magnetic field breaking time reversal symmetry. The introduction of such an external perturbation opens a gap in the phase of the system characterised by non-Abelian statistics, and makes the…

Role of temperature in the occurrence of some Zeno phenomena

2012

Temperature can be responsible for strengthening effective couplings between quantum states, determining a hierarchy of interactions, and making it possible to establish such dynamical regimes known as Zeno dynamics, wherein a strong coupling can hinder the effects of a weak one. The relevant physical mechanisms which connect the structure of a thermal state with the appearance of special dynamical regimes are analyzed in depth.

Simulation of matrix product states for dissipation and thermalization dynamics of open quantum systems

2020

Abstract We transform the system/reservoir coupling model into a one-dimensional semi-infinite discrete chain through unitary transformation to simulate the open quantum system numerically with the help of time evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm. We apply the method to study the dynamics of dissipative systems. We also generate the thermal state of a multimode bath using minimally entangled typical thermal state (METTS) algorithm, and investigate the impact of the thermal bath on an empty system. For both cases, we give an extensive analysis of the impact of the modeling and simulation parameters, and compare the numerics with the analytics.

Competition of Direct and Indirect Sources of Thermal Entanglement in a spin star network

2017

A spin star system consisting of three peripheral two-state systems and a central one is considered, with the peripheral spins assumed to interact with each other, as well as with the central one. It is shown that such two couplings, each one being a thermal entanglement source, can significantly compete in the formation of quantum correlations in the thermal state, to the point that they can destroy any thermal entanglement of the peripheral spins.

Rainfall variability in subequatorial America and Africa and relationships with the main sea-surface temperature modes (1951–1990)

1995

The rainfall variability of subequatorial South America and Africa is poorly documented owing to the scarcity of data. We present a new land-only data set of monthly precipitation from 1951 to 1990, focusing on subequatorial South America and Africa, which improves the knowledge of rainfall variability and allows comparisons with GCM outputs. The results of multivariate analyses are compared with those performed on the best actual global rainfall data set developed by Mike Hulme. The main modes of bimonthly rainfall variability are not located in the major rain-forest basins of Za'ke and Amazonia, but rather on the tropical margins, such as Venezuela or Sudan, and near-coastal equatorial ar…
